Turmeric is a flowering plant that belongs to the ginger family. It is aptly named as ‘the golden spice’, not only for its golden colour, but also in the health benefits it can provide.

Turmeric is a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory, and widely touted as a health supplement for these properties. Turmeric as a health supplement usually contains more of the spice than what would be used in cooking in order to achieve the greatest anti-inflammatory outcome.

As well as playing a role in reducing inflammation, turmeric is believed to benefit several other body ailments such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Heartburn
  • Joint pain
  • IBS, Crohn’s Disease, & Ulcerative Colitis

Now that we’re in the heart of winter, turmeric is the perfect spice to add to a delicious curry or stew dish! And for all the coffee lovers out there, you can also make a turmeric latte!

But don’t be fooled by the name, although is holds the title of ‘latte’, the drink doesn’t actually contain any coffee! Blasphemous, I know. However, the turmeric latte does make up for this by being jam-packed with antioxidants! Here’s a popular recipe if you feel like making one of your own…

Turmeric Latte:

  • Fresh turmeric (3cm piece, peeled), or ¾ teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • Fresh ginger (2cm piece, peeled), or ¼- ½ teaspoon of ground ginger
  • One pinch black pepper, and one pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of cashew or hazelnut butter
  • 1 ½ cups of milk or water (milk will make the drink creamier)
  • ½ – ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or essence

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth and frothy
  2. Pour into small mugs and heat in microwave. Sprinkle some cinnamon for the finishing touches!
